Where your baby sleeps is a matter of personal choice, and some parents prefer their baby to go into their own room from the start. There are many advantages to keeping the baby closer, though. Babies who are able to soothe themselves back to sleep (“self-soothers”) awaken briefly and go right back to sleep. During the first month (corrected age), keep naps under two hours and wake after four hours of night sleep to feed. It’s better to settle them in their own sleeping space than in bed with you as they’re less likely to resist going into their cot when you go home, and you get a good night’s sleep too. You may need to stay with them a little longer to help them settle, to offer a bit of comfort and reassurance, but try to let them go to sleep on their own. If she doesn’t, enter the room to check that everything’s okay, pat her on the head or tummy, quietly say a reassuring word and leave. Cluster feeds are a series of quick milky meals given every one to two hours from 4 P.M. to bedtime. They’re meant to load your baby’s system with calories to keep her well stocked with nutrition through the night. After the first few weeks, you will probably find that your baby is awake for longer periods and will sleep for longer too. By around two months they will begin to transition into a more regular sleep pattern and may sleep more at night than they do during the day. However, all babies are different. Although some change is necessary on the part of the family, a new baby should not dictate the when, where, and how of normal family life. As simple and important as this concept is, it can be a difficult concept for first-time parents to accept. Yet babies are adaptable, and they should be exposed to all facets of family life. Whether sleep training or not, almost all women go through a period of time (usually around four to six months) during which they are all but certain their supply is diminishing. That’s usually when the mother’s body acclimates to her milk production and her breasts stop feeling full nonstop, like they do after birth. Share your room instead of your bed with your baby. Putting your baby in bed with you raises the risk for strangulation, suffocation, entrapment, and SIDS. Bed sharing is not recommended for twins or other multiples. Despite being sold by many well-known brands, items such as cushioned sleeping pods, nests, baby hammocks and anything that wedges or straps a baby in place can pose a risk to babies less than 12 months of age. Families should be encouraged not to use sleep aids and if they do make this choice, to check whether items comply with British Standards and follow safer sleep advice.
